Project 2A: Double Exposure

In the week 5 tutorial, we were taught how to create the double exposure effect in Photoshop. Using what we learnt, for this project we had to create our own double exposure composition using a portrait photograph of ourselves.

This was the photo I took and chose for the project:

For this assignment, I wanted to choose something more uncommon for exercises like these, so I decided on a waterfall. Since the lake in the first picture is not on the side of the screen that I'm looking towards, I chose a second picture for the bottom half.

Project 2B: Poster Competition

For the second part of our project, we had to create a photographic poster for the Maybank MyTIGER Values Art Competition of 2023. The competition guidelines had us create a poster based on one of the 12 (out of 17) chosen Sustainable Development Goals. The SDG that I chose for this poster was SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

This SDG is about the waste of materials and food in our everyday society, and lists ways we can lessen the negative impact of it. I decided to focus on the aspect of food waste, and I wanted to create a poster that inspired action by showing the consequences.

Using a variety of stock images from pexels.com, I created my first poster design:

However, after some feedback from my lecturer, I ended up making some changes before submitting the poster as my school project:

FEEDBACK

Week 10
Specific Feedback
- The picture of the hand is too unnatural among the other assets, should be changed
- Concept of the clocks and overall poster is good
- Opacity of the white boxes in the bottom left should be lower to not appear so out of place

REFLECTIONS

Experience
It took me quite a while to come up with a good idea for the poster. I had decided early on which SDG I would tackle and which aspect of it I would go with, but coming up with the concept of the poster and even the tagline took multiple drafts. Finally, I was able to think of a concept that was interesting and had surrealistic imagery to carry the message that I wanted to portray. Using Youtube tutorials, I was able to figure out how to create the shattered clock and the multiple melting clocks.

Observations
There were a lot of layers involved in creating the shattered clock effect. I had to duplicate and mask a lot of things. Sometimes, the perfect idea is difficult to come across. At first, I was too focused on realistic imagery and was not able to successfully think outside the box and think of a creative idea for the poster. But by remembering the main message I wanted to convey, I was able to come up with a simple yet impactful tagline and imagery that could match it.

Findings
Masking is a really important tool and something integral in editing, as it allows for a lot of creativity and is the key for techniques like double exposure and shattered glass. Knowing how to mask effectively and efficiently is important, and I'm glad I was able to get the hang of it gradually throughout these exercises. There were a lot of colouring effects used in the process of making the poster as well, since the assets were all taken from different sources.
