Project 2A: Production Shoot

For this project, the class was split into two groups to act as a film crew and recreate a few scenes of a movie. As a member of Group S, my group and I were given the movie 'Silent', a Japanese drama.

I was in charge of the location sound, meaning I was in charge of recording and listening to the audio from the boom mic.

During class time on week 10, we went around and filmed the scenes we needed. After that, we had to edit the footage separately and practice colour correction. Our teacher encouraged us to experiment with the order of the scenes and create whatever type of video we wanted. I ended up creating a minute-long short.

Colour correction is useful to set the scene better. We had lighting equipment, but as it's a school project it is still limited. I made the scenes warmer in tone since my concept is supposed to be love.

Project 2B: TikTok / Instagram Video

This project gave us a lot of freedom. We were told to create a short about ourselves, whatever we wanted to do.

Since I like editing and I like being immersed in a story, I came up with the idea to have my video be looping. I had a friend help me film, and she was tasked to rewind the video I was editing and that would rewind the actual video.

I first did some brief sketches:

Due to the nature of the video, and the fact that I'm meant to be editing the video that is currently playing, I used a greenscreen during filming to be edited over in post. However, because the camera was moving so much, I had to move to After Effects and track the screen.

After that, I fiddled with the colour correction. Since the lighting was very warm at the filming location, I made the overall tone cooler.

And finally, I added a glitching effect that would happen during the 'rewinds'. This not only adds looks but makes it so the concept of the video is clearer and more easily understood by the viewers.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
I enjoyed the shooting experience for Project 2A. It was good to experience being in a production crew and film stuff, even if it was only short scenes. I think it was also fun to be able to edit the footage however I wanted. I've done colour correction before, but it was good experience to learn how to do it in Premiere Pro. Also, because of 2B, I had to learn to track a screen in After Effects. YouTube was helpful in this. I learnt new skills and was able to make a decent edit. There can be some improvement with the shakiness of the greenscreen, but I was running out of time and it's quite tricky to fix, so I should maybe give myself more time to work on it next time.

Observations
During colour correction, I don't really realise how much of a difference the effects make until I compare the with and without side by side. While changing the colours, since it's gradual, I don't really notice just how much I've changed just by changing the values here and there. Colour correction can make a difference in tone of the video and in also just making it less hard on the eyes/ more aesthetically pleasing.

Findings
Editing, post-production, adding effects and music etc. can really affect the final video. For the video for Project 2B, I was worried I concept was too boring and I wouldn't be able to create something memorable or good. However, the final ended up conveying a clear message and being unique. Despite how awkward or cringe it may be, the stuff I added in post makes it more tolerable.
